Determination of secondary particles in the concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10, contribution of precursors in the municipalities of Temuco and Padre Las Casas

ID: 608897-72-LP19

Atmospheric particles in urban areas consist of a mixture of primary particles (emitted directly from the emitting source) or secondary particles (formed “in-situ” in the atmosphere through processes and physicochemical reactions of precursor gases). The development of chemical particle speciation measurements helps to understand the role of both primary and secondary particles and allows quantifying the contribution of the main emission sources.

The Decontamination Plan of Temuco and Padre Las Casas (DS N ° 8/2015 of the MMA) needs to have a “measurable” follow-up of the effectiveness of the control politics implemented and those not yet implemented, which will be aimed at reducing primary emissions of particulate matter and also the gaseous precursors of PM2.5. Regards to this, a series of key actions is planned to start in 2020. Then, this study represents the Ex-ante situation regarding such measures. Thus, the General Objective of this study is to monitor PM10 and PM2.5, determine the chemical composition of fine particles and the factors that influence the formation of secondary particles, in order to support the monitoring of the evolution of the air quality of Temuco and Padre Las Casas.

Different levels of technology are included to carried out the monitoring activities, including state-of-the-art Mass Spectrometers for ambient particles (ACSM, Aerodyne Research Inc.), filter-based methods to chemical analysis at international certificated laboratory (Harvard University and Finish Meteorological Institute) and indicative low cost optical monitors (LoV-Cost-IoT).
