Determination of secondary particles in the concentrations of PM1.0, PM2.5 and PM10, contribution of precursors, in the communes of Talca and Maule
ID 608897-72-LP19
The World Health Organization positions air pollution as one of the main environmental problems and estimated that in 2016 there were approximately 4.2 million premature deaths per year worldwide, whose cause is associated with exposure to air pollutants, especially exposure to fine particles (WHO, 2016). Talca and Maule (Maule Region) in wintertime reached particle ambient concentration above the national standards by which both communes were declared saturated by PM10 (MINSEGPRES, 2010). The respective Decontamination Plan (PDA) of the D.S. N ° 49/2016 (MMA, 2016) will be in effect the year until the year 2026.
The aim of this study is to carry out a monitoring of PM10, PM2.5, and PM1.0, to determine its chemical composition and the factors that influence the formation of secondary particles, and its precursors, in order to support the monitoring of the evolution of air quality by atmospheric particles.
The development of chemical particle speciation measurements helps to understand the role of both primary and secondary particles and allows quantifying the contribution of the main emission sources. In the study area, the main emission source is wood burning for heating. However, urban aerosol consist of a mixture of primary and secondary particles. To our knowledge, this is the first study based on air quality measurements and chemical speciation implemented here that will indicate the contribution of primary sources and secondary particle matter.
Different levels of technology are included to carried out the monitoring activities, including state-of-the-art Mass Spectrometers for ambient particles (ACSM, Aerodyne Research Inc.), filter-based methods to chemical analysis at international certificated laboratory (Harvard University and Finish Meteorological Institute) and indicative low cost optical monitors (LoV-IoT).
